Advance Level Qualification, commonly known as A’ Level, is a UK-administered examination for students seeking to gain admission into universities in the UK and other parts of the world. To qualify, students must be 16 years and above. The A’ Level program runs for a period of two (2) years and requires students to register a minimum of three (3) subjects before they can be allowed to sit for the exams.
The AS Level is equivalent to the first year of study in the A’ Level program. Note that some universities do not consider possession of the AS Level certificate to be adequate for admission purposes. WHY A’ LEVEL?
The A’ Level certificate is recognized internationally as a suitable entry qualification for admission into many undergraduate programs and professional training opportunities. Possession of the A’ Level certificate is an added advantage for students, given how competitive undergraduate programs at the world’s best universities are; it may be the difference between being considered for admission and outright rejection!
WHAT SUBJECTS ARE CONSIDERED IN THE A’/AS LEVELS?
Subjects registered depend on the aspirations of the students and their intended course of study. Usually, students register subjects based on their field, i.e. either Science, Arts, Humanities, or Languages. There are no compulsory subjects, but it is advisable to know the subjects your preferred institution will be considered for admission since the choice of subject and entry requirement differs from one school, country, or exam board to another.
HOW ARE STUDENTS ASSESSED?
Assessments are done mainly through written examinations and practical coursework in both years of the course. Grades are awarded on a scale of A* to E. Grades are interpreted as follows:
A*= 90%, A = 80%, B = 70%, C = 60%, D = 50%, E = 40%.
Students who underperform are usually graded with a U, which indicates that such a student did not meet the minimum requirement. Students who fail their exams will be required to re-sit the whole examinations and not a specific module.
WHICH EXAMINATION BOARD CONDUCTS A’LEVEL EXAMS?
Various examination boards conduct A’ Level examinations, but for international schools, Edexcel, Pearson, and Cambridge International Examination (CIE) are recommended.
